Jon is a 23-year-old armed forces member who returned from deployment six months ago. He reports to the base primary care clinic where you work as a behavioral health provider offering consults.
You learn that while Jon was deployed and on patrol, the car in front of him was stuck by a roadside bomb. Two of his fellow soldiers were killed and he suffered minor injuries from the blast.
Since that time, he has been bothered by unwanted thoughts about the incident “in the shower, during drill, anytime. I don’t want to think about it, but can’t stop.”
He also reports hypervigilance, panic when he hears loud or unexpected noises, and nightmares.
He has recently started seeing a therapist to help deal with some of these symptoms, but wants to talk about medications that could help. He provides authorization for you to communicate with his therapist and primary care provider.
